We are the independent oversight arm of the California State Legislature and the custodians of California’s Whistleblower Hotline. What will you do?

As a Financial Auditor (Auditor Evaluator I), you will work on one of the largest financial audits in the world. Financial Auditors ensure California’s multi-billion dollar financial statements are fairly stated by analyzing financial data, assessing controls over financial reporting, and evaluating risks. This work is necessary for California to receive billions in federal funds each year that impact schools and other public services.

  • You have knowledge of accounting principles and an interest in/experience working with financial data.

  • You are able to think critically and synthesize data and information into logical, meaningful, and concise conclusions that will inform sound recommendations.

  • You have strong communication skills including the ability to write in a clear and concise manner. 
  • You are willing to occasionally work long or irregular hours to get the job done.
  • You are, or will become a California resident.
  • You have a Bachelor’s Degree or higher, preferably in a field related to Accounting or Business Administration (registered college seniors can begin the process but must graduate before starting).

How do I join?

The California State Auditor is part of the merit-based California civil service selection system. To complete this process, you must do the following:

Create a Profile and Take the Exam

Create a profile on our website. Upload your resume and take the Auditor Evaluator I exam by October 19, 2024 at 12:00pm.

Current or former state employees with transfer eligibility may submit their application through their CalCareer account. If you are not a state employee, or your state classification is not eligible to transfer, you must take the exam to be considered for the position. To take the exam, create a profile and upload your resume on our website to apply. Failure to submit the required documentation will result in disqualification from the hiring process.

Submit an Application

Log into your profile, get your results, and enter the hiring process by October 21, 2024 at 11:59pm. If your exam score is high enough, we will contact you with the next steps of the hiring process.

What is the hiring timeline?

There are multiple steps to the hiring process including an exam and multiple interviews. The general steps in the hiring process are as follows:

  • You will receive an invitation to complete a pre-recorded video interview by October 28 if your exam score is high enough. You will have ten calendar days to complete your pre-recorded video interview.
  • You will be notified in mid-November if you are moving forward in the hiring process.
  • You will participate in an in-person interview in mid-December through early January.
  • You will be notified if you are moving forward within two to three weeks of your in-person interview.
  • You will join our team in early April or early July 2025.

This position is eligible for participation in the office’s hybrid telework program. Work at the alternate work location must be in California and conducted in a space that is ergonomically sound, private, distraction-free, and has safe working conditions to be eligible to telework.
